Local Area

What's around you

Round Mountain sits in the Big Smoky Valley, boxed in by the Toiyabe and Toquima mountain ranges — a working mining town with high desert wilderness, ghost towns, and hunting country in every direction.

Eat & Shop

  • Blitz Creek Bar & Grill
Local grill and bar on Electrum Dr. — burgers, sandwiches, a cold drink after a long drive. Delivers to the motel. (775) 377-1122
  • The Waypoint Coffee and Drinks
A cozy, locally owned spot for coffee and drinks, tucked right at the entrance to the Hadley subdivision. 30 Electrum Dr., Gate B.
  • The General Store
Grocery, deli, and fresh-cut meat counter on Electrum Dr. — good for stocking up before heading into the backcountry. (775) 377-3500

Hiking & Exploring

  • Toiyabe Crest Trail
A long, remote ridgeline trail through the Toiyabe Range connecting toward Austin and the Arc Dome Wilderness. Serious mileage, high elevation, and little water — plan accordingly.
  • Alta Toquima Wilderness & Mt. Jefferson
High alpine terrain in the Toquima Range east of town, with trout streams and Nevada's third-highest peak.
  • Berlin Townsite Loop
An easy walk through the ghost town at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, ending at a hillside cemetery.
  • Trail Riding & Off-Roading
The Toiyabe, Toquima, and Monitor ranges are laced with backcountry roads and trails well suited to horseback riding and off-highway travel outside designated wilderness. Check current road conditions and wilderness boundaries before heading out.

Hunting

  • Your Base Camp
Sitting right between Unit 161 and Unit 173, the Jumping Jack makes an ideal base camp for either area. Whether you're after elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, or pronghorn antelope, come lay your head here and hit the field well-rested.
  • Elk, Mule Deer & Antelope — Unit Group 161–164
Covers the surrounding Toiyabe and Toquima country for elk, mule deer, and antelope. Nevada Department of Wildlife notes this stretch of central Nevada is remote, with full services only in Austin, Carvers/Round Mountain, Eureka, and Tonopah — worth stocking up here before heading out.
  • Elk, Mule Deer & Antelope — Unit Group 171–173
Covers the Toiyabe and Shoshone country west and north of town, including the Arc Dome Wilderness. Same story on services — Austin, Carvers/Round Mountain, and Tonopah are your closest full-service towns, so it pays to fuel up and grab supplies here first.
  • Tags & Regulations
Big game tags go through NDOW's draw, applications typically open mid-March through mid-May. Check current regulations before you plan a hunt.

Mining & Rockhounding

  • Round Mountain Gold Mine
The town takes its name from the working open-pit gold mine right next door — one of the reasons Round Mountain exists at all.
  • Berlin Ghost Town & Diana Mine
A preserved 1890s mining town at Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, with a guided tour into the historic Diana Mine (call ahead — tour sizes are limited).
  • Rockhounding on BLM Land
Nevada is mostly BLM land, and casual rock and mineral collecting is generally allowed for personal use — up to 25 lbs a day, 250 lbs a year. Collecting is not allowed inside Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park itself.
This is a starting guide — hours, tour availability, and regulations change. Worth confirming details with each spot before guests head out.
